Tressette is one of the great Italian card games: four players in fixed partnerships, a 40-card Italian deck and no trump suit at all. Its famous quirk is the scoring — the ace is worth a whole point while the three, two and the face cards are worth a third each, and the leftover fraction is simply thrown away at the end of every deal.
Schnapsen
Schnapsen is the sharp two-handed card game of Austria and southern Germany, played with a twenty-card pack. Every point counts: aces and tens carry the deck, a king-and-queen marriage scores in a flash, and daring to close the stock can win the deal outright or hand it to your opponent. The first to 66 takes the deal, and the first to seven game points takes the Bummerl.
Belote
Belote is the most popular card game in France, played four-handed in fixed partnerships with a 32-card deck. One suit becomes trump, where the jack and the nine suddenly outrank the aces, and holding the king and queen of that suit — belote-rebelote — quietly adds twenty points. Bidding for trump, the duty to trump, and the ten-point last trick turn every deal into a small tactical battle to 501.
Jass
Jass is the national card game of Switzerland, and its Schieber form pits two partnerships against each other with a 36-card deck. The team that names trump — or pushes the choice across to a partner — hunts for the Bauer and the Nell, the jack and nine that rule the trump suit. Declared Weis combinations, the trump king-and-queen Stöck, and careful trumping carry each side through a long game to 1000 points.
Coinche
Coinchée — also called coinche or belote coinchée — is the bidding cousin of Belote for four players in two partnerships. Before a card is played, the teams auction a point contract and a trump suit, and a rival who smells failure can coincher, doubling the stakes, with a surcoinche to raise them again. The bidders must then make exactly what they promised, which turns every deal into a duel of nerve toward 1000 points.
Schafkopf
Schafkopf is the beloved Bavarian trick-taking game for exactly four players. Its heart is the Rufspiel: the declarer calls an ace, and whoever holds it secretly becomes his partner — nobody else knows who plays with whom until the cards reveal it. With Wenz and Farbsolo for the brave, every hand is a small drama of hidden alliances.
Skat
Skat is Germany’s national card game and one of the deepest three-player games ever devised. The Reizen auction decides who plays alone against the other two, with the famous bid ladder, the hidden two-card Skat, and contracts from humble Suit games to Grand and the daring Null, where the declarer promises to lose every single trick.
Doppelkopf
Doppelkopf is Germany’s great partnership game with a twist: the deck is doubled — every card exists twice — and the two holders of the Queens of Clubs form the hidden Re side against Kontra.
